Good:
plenty of cultural exhibits and museums
linked to decent public transportation
nice climate (much cooler in summer than most of the East Bay)
lots of activities for children (Oakland Zoo, Fairy Land, Knowland park, etc.)

Bad:
Lots of drug and gang activity (extremely high crime rate)
Expensive to live there
Notoriously poor school system

The cost of living is pretty high everywhere in the Bay Area. Oakland has a reputation for being a bit rough, but there are nice neighborhoods too.

Advantages include:
Good public transportation
Access to other great places to go, like San Francisco, Berkeley, not too far from San Jose,
Within an hour or two from mountains, ocean, redwood froests)
Lots of diversity-- many kinds of people, many kinds of food
Always sometings to do-- great places to eat, great entertainment options in SF, lots of museums....
The climate is temperate for most of the year-- there is a "rainy season" from around October to March, where it rains alot, but it hardly ever rains between April and September. Does not get too terribly hot or cold....
If you;'re a sports fan, there are the Raiders and the A's

YOu don;t say why you're asking about this. If you are consdiering a job in Oakland, many people live in the suburbs-- there are scads of bedroom communities with good public transportation access.

I've lived in the Bay Area -- not Oakland specifically-for almost five years and love it here. There's always something fun to do... whether you like nature, sports, culture, etc. And if you like "ethnic" food, you can get it reasonably priced at "mom & pop" restaurants

Can you say "Drive By". I know that's what I've heard about it. Oakland,Compton, Watts, San Andreas,Los Angeles ( parts of it anyway) are dangerous.
