I'm in the market for a used car and a friend referred me to a '97 ford escort wagon with 142,000 miles on it. The car has not been driven for a year. Should I assume that the engine is no longer any good? The car has been sitting outdoors the whole time. Thanks.

I htink the better question is if the car has been started. If not I would say it may take some work to get it in good running condition but I don't think it is ruined.

If the oil has not bean changed and the engine not started for a year than It might be bad. Take out the dip stick and look at the oil its probably black and thick if its like this than change it. Your fuel injectors could be clogged as well. But I would change the oil and filter and try to start the car If it runs than great but if it doesn't than try changing the fuel filter. If you still have no luck than you have a problem with the fuel system (expensive).

NO IT SHOULD BE OKAY I WOULD PULL THE SPARK PLUGS OUT AND SQUART SOME MOTOR OIL IN THE PLUG HOLES AND LET IT STAND FOR A LITTLE WHILE AND THEN CRANK THE ENGINE OVER TO GET OIL AROUND AND THEN PUT THE PLUGS BACK IN AND START THE CAR UP ALSO IT WOULD BE GOOD TO ADD SOME NEW GAS IN THE TANK WITH SOME ADDITAVE JUST IN CASE THE FUEL IS STALE FROM SITTING

Most likely it will be still good. Just buy a new Battery, change the oil, and fire it up. Also replace the fuel filter after a tank or two of gas. Because the gas tank could have accumulated rust flakes, and that can clog up the fuel filter.

this should not be a problem.when you think of it boats are stored from season to season although they do have a procedure for storing. gas treatment ,fogging engine to prevent oxidation.would suggest you change the oil and filter before starting although it is not critical make sure engine has coolant also. listen to engine for any abnormal noises when running let it warm up before making a decision.

it is not a good idea to let an engine sit for extended periods.Condensation inside the engine which is normally steamed out, allows rust to form on valves, lifters, camshafts, crankshaft etc. Once pitted by corrosion, it is the kiss of death.

the engine should be fine. put some fresh gas in it and fire it up it might put out a puff of smoke at first, should clear right up.12,000miles /year x 10 years =120,000 your only a little bit above if the price is right and it's clean worth a chance

Running is what wears an engine. If it has been sitting, and is protected, it will be exactly as it was when removed from the vehicle and placed in storage. No worse, and no better.

extremely its undesirable to enable a vehicle sit down without commencing it and a minimum of utilising down the block because of the fact axels can circulate undesirable from constint sitting as my grandmas vehicle did interior the storage, the oil does could save issues lubricated and to sidestep rust like the previous guy mentioned. while she began the vehicle and it drove for type of one hundred eighty miles then the enigin block cracked and broke a piston head.

142,000 miles.
That's alot of miles.
It's a good bet that a few things would
need to to be changed, even though it
hasn't been running.
