Some are good. Most are bad.
My favorite is Pine Cone Research.
"Pinecone research is a reputed online research company. It pays you to evaluate new products through online surveys. You will generally receive $5.00 as compensation for a completed product evaluation. Occasionally they may ship you a product to test. Pinecone research is reputed for their prompt payments and you can expect one or two survey invites per month. Unfortunately, they do not recruit new members through their website. However, they post recruitment opportunities through banner ads on various websites or through referral links from time to time."
You will have to wait for a link to appear on
http://www.internetpaidsurveys.com/survey2.htm
or use google and search for "pinecone banner"
Good luck finding the signup banner! Its totally worth it ;)

Yes, they are a good way to earn a little exta cash (like going out for pizza exta cash--not like buy a new TV extra cash). It's best to sign up with several sites, as different companies recruit survey takers through different places.
I've listed some of the sites I have taken surveys through and actually been paid (or recieved other rewards like gift cards or CDS) on the following site, if you are interested:
http://www.windhavenweb.com/surveys
I list how they pay you, what I like and dislike about them, whether they have an affiliate or referral program, etc.
There are others out there. Be careful though, there are also scams. Don't sign up for any survey site which asks you to pay to access the surveys. Also watch for language like "get paid for taking surveys AND SIGNING UP FOR OFFERS" if you don't want to have to sign up for stuff with other companies to get paid.
Always carefully read their terms of service and privacy policy. If in their privacy policy they say they only use aggregated info, this is GOOD SIGN they are legit. Aggregated info information that is grouped together so it can't be connected with anyones personal identification like name, e-mail, phone or address. That's what survey sites SHOULD collect. Avoid sites that say they give, rent, or sell any personal information (info that is not agregated) to third parties (unless you really don't mind getting junk mail, telemarketing calls, and spam).
Also just recently came across a good survey ratings site that I've found very helpful:

I've had great luck with SurveySavvy. It's totally free! They are a member of the better business Bureau and i've earned over $100.00 after just a couple months! Thats not bad for just giving you opinion. There is NO SPAM and if you start referring other people, you will earn an average of $2.00 for each survey they take.

You do not need appropiate certifications . You simply need to be you. All you need to do is subscribe , await surveys notifies come in your Inbox and then zip over the query.
This is the ideal site to do all this is due to the fact that you can start taking $3 around $500 for surveys in no time so, ... why not have some entrateining and spare time while you working from your residence because this is exactly what this site offers you.

most are bogus... a couple pay a few dollars if you qualify...
there is a legitimate company I occassionally do surveys for... but it is not an online company... you go in person if you qualife... if you are selected, you are paid in cash... usually $50 - $150 and usually averages $50 an hour... it is called Savitz Research... look them up.
you would be better off collecting aluminum cans than doing online surveys.

I don`t think that`s the way to earn extra cash. You can make a few dollar on it,that`s it.I tried many sites before, non of them worked.I recommend to try some "work from home" jobs. They more successful.

I have went to a paid survay at trigon reasearch. I got paid 30 dollars for the hour. Yes you can make money on them. I woud't use it to replace your job though, its not reliable source of income. Sometimes you won't even make to cut to get accepted. Im not sure online survays are good, as many are proably scams.
