I did this with some of my jewellery and had a jeweller make a fabulous ring.
Your best bet is to have a look around the internet for ideas that you want, then email these guys and see what they can do!

yes, a good goldsmith will be able to do this.
i mean a good one, as chains contain lots of solder, so the melting is important. Gold can be reasonably clarified and re worked, though it can be quite advanced.
I have worked in tandem with a good bullion dealers, who will individually refine, at a higher cost, so it actually is your gold, in fact, with some people having different items, the finnished raw material has come out at 430 fine (for example) the crap skimmed off, the brass and silver left in (your origional metal) or fully refined, to pure, and re alloyed.
This can be way expensive, but basically, your metal can be anything from simply melted, and re worked, hopeing it doesnt crack or have flaws, to refining, to simply trading in. It may be some can be reused readily, some may be better off scrapped, due to impurities.(i dont have my own workshop anymore, before you ask)

If the metal is high enough quality you can sell them to be melted down. You can also take them to a jeweler and have them repaired for a small cost.

You can sell them to many jewellers as scrap gold/ silver. They pay you a good price on the weight and you can use the money to buy new things you like.

you could see your local college that does jewellery classes and see if it can be melted down, otherwise is there any way you can customize them, perhaps try mending them yourself, or sewing them onto a pair of jeans or a handbag for a cool customized look.
