Why not consider using several media? Begin with Gesso to add texture to areas that you would like, then lay down wide swashes of color with Acrylic. Use pen and ink or indelible marker for fine detail and additional texture.
Use your imagination! You could also use collage and colored pencils. I would finish it all off with a good sealer like urethane.
Have fun with it!

Oils are good on canvas - you can get lovely rich colour and texture which would be good for what you are doing. However they are not cheap and take a long time to dry. Acrylics cheaper and dry very fast but not the same depth of colour.
Personally I would use oils.

Use acrylic because. It's cheaper, has good color, mistakes are easily corrected, quick drying time, you can use it thicker if you want it to have the feel and look of oil, clean up is a cinch with soap and water.

Acrylic is probably the cheapest and easiest.
Oh, and the plural of 'medium' is 'media'. Just so you know ;-)

on canvas acrylics, oil paints or oil pastels work best. if ure a beginner-oil pastels
medium- acrylics
natural talent & loads of experience- oil paints just because they dry quicker and are harder to use, you can work more with oil pastels.
