Do you mean in the USA? Or in Canada? Or someplace else?
You don't say where you're talking about. If you ask a good question then we'll give you a good answer.
For the record, the Canadian French/English problems are obvious to this day, and that story is very different from the American story.

For 500 years both of them wanted to control one another plus all the spice trade etc.The more valuable colonies they had, whether it be spice, gold ,lumber, the richer they would be and the more powerful. Then the Dutch and Portugese got in on the Act and the Spanish were always a pain also. After Napoleon lost at Waterloo to the British, that was about it for them. All they could do was to hold on to the colonies they had.And as we know they have all slipped through their hands. That goes for all the Imperialists.
