I've had my Sony sat t-60 tivo unit since tivo hit the market...maybe 5-6 years ago... It's never, NEVER had a single problem and still going strong. My season pass is 20 or so long and I record & delete many shows per day.

Properly looked after a HDD will last for many years although at some point it will experience a mechanical failure. My advice is that if you've recorded on a HDD something you particularly want to keep, back it up on to a DVD or two.

They may eventually wear out because they have moving parts, but the HD is the same as a HD in a computer. I was thinking about upgrading mine from a 80G, but I'm waiting for the prices to come down a bit. It will be years and years before you wear out the HD.

im sure they do, and no doubt unlike a pc, only an expensive tv repairer can fit one?
at 50 quid to even look at something, and a cheap recorder at 70 quid, i expect their designed to be desposable, these high tech replacements for bad old video, that doubtless will last half as long, and not actually be any better.

Yes and no... Yes - in that it is mechanical and sooner or later will fail due to long term use.. No - in that picture doesn't gradually deteriorate in the same way as old VHS did...
