In the original book by H G Wells, I believe the main character is simply referred to as "the Time Traveller" and we don't discover his name. As the story is told from his point of view, that works quite well.

There have been 3 films made of the book, and in the second one the time traveller is referred to as George (first name only), although an engraved plate on the time machine itself is inscribed "Manufactured by H. George Wells", inferring that the main character is HG Wells himself, (his first names are Herbert George). The suggestion in this film, therefore, is that HG Wells' science fiction books (written in Victorian times) were so technogically beyond their years that it was fun to speculate whether he had, indeed, discovered some method of travelling to the future.

In the third and most recent film, the time traveller is called
Professor Alexander Hartdegan.
