My 15 year old son is in the unlucky position of not quite being old enough to work properly. Does anyone have any ideas on what he could do/ where he could work to earn some money?

15 is old enough. Check with school on requirements of or if working papers are necessary.

I got my first job by checking with my High School Guidance Office . They use to have info on local businesses looking for high school kids. Do They still do that?

Also stop by your local Pizza joints if they have a restaurant portion they often have Bus Boy positions. Tell them you are willing to learn.

Local supermarkets may be a way to get your first experience while you look around for something you really like.

From web site abt Student working papers:
in some states, if you're under eighteen, you may need to obtain working papers (officially called Employment / Age Certificates) in order to legally be able to work. The best place to find out if you need working papers is your school guidance office. If you need working papers, the counselors can give you the form you will need to complete or tell you where to get it.

Dishwasher in a restaurant.
I did this at the age of 15, then later became a cook at 16, then later worked as a swing manager(worked 3 management shifts as well as cooking) at the age of 17.All in the same establishment.

Relatives are always the best way in my opinion. If you haven't got any in your local area, work through your list of friends (they know 5 people each, thats a network of 100 people if you have 20 friends). Chances of him getting a job through the newspaper are incredibly slim, but people need that kind of enthusiastic labour, but only if it comes with a referecne (ie. you - the parent).
