It really depends on your lifestyle. If you are a busy person, a cat might be better for you since they don't need to be walked like dogs and require less attention. As long as they have food, water, a clean litter box, and a comfy place to nap, they will be quite happy.
If you are the kind of person who wants an energetic, friendly, sociable animal, a dog will probably be better. Most cats don't enjoy being picked up and hugged and cuddled as some dogs do and cats are more independent and won't come running to see you.
Also think about how much noise your pet will make, a dog's bark is a lot louded than a cat's meow. No matter what animal you choose to get, I'm sure it will bring you nothing but love and joy as long as you give it the same.

It's a personal choice. Depends on what you are looking for in a companion. Do your research, then make your decision.

Basically:

Dogs are more "pack orientated" and need more of your time. The rewards are tremendous "if" you pick the right breed for your lifestyle and put in the time and work. Dogs need "obedience" training to be good companions.

Things to consider: Do you have children? How old are they? Are you going to teach them how to treat a pet? How much available time do you have to spend with a dog? How much room do you have to house a dog? If you work a lot or plan on making a dog an "outside" pet, do both of you a favor and don't get a dog!

Cats are more independent, they require less time and work. They are more content to be left home alone. That doesn't mean they are any less "enjoyable" as companions. They don't require as much room.

Things to consider: Are you going to keep them "inside"? It's not a good idea to let any cat "outside" in today's world. They can get hit by a car, hurt by another animal, catch a fatal disease (like Aids or Leukemia). Who is going to clean the litter box?

Like I said, very "basic" ideas. Lots to consider, good luck.

I like both a lot but it depends on the person and if the cats/dogs are cute

I have had both, I love both. Dogs need a yard and are higher maintenance. Cats can be fun and full of personality too.

Most dogs are better than most cats but I still prefer the really good cats (like mine) over really good dogs because when cats are really loving its because they decided to not because you told them to

Dogs definatley. I like cats dont get me wrong, but they cough up hair balls and other unidentified objects. Cats also take longer to groom. So i would say dogs 100%. Hope i helped!
