the command prompt is where you can run special commands, and they do stuff. On windows it's not really used, by the average joe user, but other operating systems like Linux it is used a lot.

It gives you access to commands that there isn't a windows meny for.

It's also a good way to get round some lame issues that Windows has had for years. Wondoze still doesn't reliably show network and plugin drives, but the command prompt will get you there. I have some directories that contain file entries that appear to poinson Explorer, but DOS commands still work fine there.

I also installed Cygwin, and I put it ahead of all the Micro$oft stuff in the command path, so I have a find that actually works and I can use all the grown up (written in the 1970s) commands that the Unix shell offers instead of the lame DOS alternatives.

The command prompt is also way faster than Windoze, so if you know the right command you can get your answer fast. Want to know your IP address? Well, you can start clicking or you can go to the command prompt and type "ipconfig" which will give you an answer in about a second.

Lots of things you can do with the command prompt.

Using XP...Click Start and then Click Run
At the run prompt type in "command"
Then hit enter.

A black (dos) box will open up with a command prompt
This is as close as you can get to the old style DOS prompt.

There still are some applications where this can be used, it is also a nice networking tool, you can run ping, tracert, and many other tools at this prompt.

When done using this you can type "exit" at the prompt and
it will close.
If you just try to close it with the corner "x" like a normal windows program you will have to go thru the "end now" pop up to close it.
Either one will work.
Hope this helps
