As a distant ancestor of the Slavic warlord 'Pog', who, like his more famous contemporary Vlad the Impaler, butchered considerably large numbers of locals, I find myself wondering when did the term Pogram go out of fashion.
During the 1970s you could hardly read an article on Pol Pot without seeing the word. Nowadays its ethnic cleansing this, ethnic cleansing that. Why don't we stick with the correct word, and not invent new phrases for no good reason.

There are still plenty of folks out here who recognize and understand the word "pogram" -- however ...

once you walk into your local High School, listen to these young people where they gather -- you realize something very significant about the state of education nowadays ... and that is that these young people have a much more limited vocabulary than we (the elders) did while growing up.

The words "Ethnic Cleansing" is a dumbed-down way of saying what we understand -- and yes, I do remember Pol Pot, but also I have the stories of my parents/grandparents experiences with the loss of family members during WWII and Hitler's pogram (Ethnic Cleansing) as well -- for Hitler had plenty of ethnicities that he wanted to exterminate besides those of the Jewish Faith -- The Poles, the Romas, etc. So yes, these ethnicities did suffer a lot at the hands of various 'ethnic cleansing' desires of the ruling populaces.

this ethnic cleansing word comes from the Bosnian civil war in the 1990s. It started out as a propaganda phrase, and people kind of latched onto it, I guess because it's cynicism is so obvious and grotesque. Pogrom is a word from another language and for that reason it doesn't have the same punch.

The best answer is found in the novel 1984 I think. People control speech as a means of shaping/controlling thought. My belief is that people invent new words, in many cases, to replace the original simply as a means of severing the connection between a word or phrase and its origins. In other words, an attempt to propagate ignorance. A person who knows nothing with believe anything.

(pogrom, I think you'll find)

The country's being dumbed down - I was horrified when I returned from a 15 yr absence to discover the term "joined-up thinking" - had to ask someone what it meant.
