I have an old fashioned coal fire that has a boiler at the back of it. The fire heats the water for use. I dont run rads from it. This boiler has sprung a leak but it doesn't leak all the time, for some strange reason. Can some plumber please tell me (a) can it be fixed and how much should it cost? Or (b) will it have to be replaced and how much should that cost? I've had a mad year with this house, where everything that could go wrong did! I live in the Republic of Ireland so if any Irish plumbers could answer I'd appreciate it.

This type of back boiler where you have to open a damper to heat the water is designed for hot water only and is connected direct to your hot water cylinder ( no coil in the cylinder ) if it starts leaking any worse you could get the contents of the cylinder in your living room . Its a big and messy job to change as its actually built into the chimney. Good luck

it would be fair to say it leaks when fire is burning if so this is due to expansion of joints and leak will get a lot worse , best option take replace as even if you repair you need to take it out . and put in a good corrosion inhibitor . why a have a back boiler with no rads what a waste of heat

Do you have a gas supply to your house, if so scrap the back boiler and go for a combination boiler that will run radiators and give you hot water without having to light the fire every time you need hot water.
