Because Star Trek has been around so long it was easy to become "attached to the characters. they were there week after week no matter what series of Star Trek you watched....Star Wars was 6 movies and the last two were definitely lacking... I think the popularity of SW was the first one....for the time it was great special effects and a villain you loved to hate the rest just kinda followed on its shirt tails.....after the words: Luke I am your father....people just sort of stuck around to see what would happen...back to Darth Vader the new movies were supposed to be this is how he came to be and we had to sit thru 3 movies to see them slap a suit on him at the last minute. Kind of a let down. Star Trek was also one goal.......Star Trek was different goals each week kept us coming back for more.

It's partly due to the fact that when the first films came out SW had jaw-droppingly ground-breaking SFX. I remember going to see the first one at the local flicks and, from the opening scene, it fair blew me away. Space battles had never been done so well. At the time, what had Star Trek done? Nothing. To that end, the SW films have a movie heritage than film fans cannot ignore.
If a new one came out next year, you'd have to be fairly strong not to resist going to see it on the big screen - even though the last three were pretty bad in many respects.

I like Star Wars, but it's not really science fiction (actually, it's space opera). Star Wars is more of a mythological fable set in space. Star Trek, on the other hand, is more science fiction and actually makes you think, which is why I like Star Trek much better.

I like the first three Star Wars movies but hated the last three. I like the first two series of Star Trek but got lost in the last ones. I guess it's all in the eyes of the beholder so to speak.

At least with Star Trek (Unless you are referring to the Film) it's over in a blink.
Star Wars is an Endurance of Crap Storey with an over indulgence of graphical FX. I do like the bit in the original one where the "Death Star" blows up and then dangles on the piece of string whilst still on fire! Class, Totally Class!
I would rather watch Battlestar Galactica whilst having needles inserted in my eyes!
Funny enough I don't own any of the above on DVD although I own more than a few Trilogies and Quadrilogies. my Fave's being Matrix, Blade, Alien, Predator (and AlienvPredator) Starship Troupers etc.

Star Trek is almost achievable. Star Wars is pure fantasy.

i grew up with both and star wars is the first fantasy film i recall going to the cinema to see. i was 5 yrs old and was blown away. star trek came later and i just didn't get into the series as much as soe but i did enjoy the films -though star trek iv -the voage home was typical of its time - mid 80's and eco friendly. was there a need ? the star wars prequals were dismal though the last of them was marginally and i do mean marginally better than eps 1+2. you can't beat han solo, chewbacca(never could understand how han could understand chewie), luke, leia, obi wan, r2-d2 + c3po. classic. saying all that, what about battlestar galactica? original class but the updated version is superb. got to love it.

Because star trek is good and star wars is rubbish.
I've always liked star trek, and like you have always hated star wars.
I don't know why it's so popular, it's the same with lord of the rings, that's popular and rubbish.

yet yet another Trek vs Wars instigation. they are the two great works of fiction. i'm partial to star Trek because of the fact it has plenty extra to grant intellectually. star Wars is great relaxing to observe once you only choose for to instruct the ideas off and watch issues circulate: PEWPEW! BOOOOM!!!

Here we go comparing the impossible again! This need to vote on things baffles me. Just because they both have Star at the beginning doesn't mean we have to compare. It is possible to like both without picking a winner.
