If you want Vista, 1GB for any kind of speed (of course it also depends on your processor, video card and to some extent your hard drive). If you want to game on Vista, nothing less than 2GB. You heard it here... first?

For Windows XP, I'd say if you are happy with 512MB then stick with it, if you want it to appear to run faster, then get 1GB. More memory never hurts, ever.

It use to be you were wasting money pumping up over 512MB, but with all the security programs you need to try and stay safe 1GB+ is not a bad idea. I run 768MB on a P-III only because that is all the motherboard can handle.
On a well protected computer you should have
1-Antivirus
1-Firewall
2 to 6-Antispyware programs
On my computer that chews up 385Mb of RAM at boot.

It is impossible to run any Windows efficiently because it's an atrociously bad operating system, but you can eliminate some of the headache by having at least 1 GB of RAM, although with 2 GB you can be fairly sure that demanding applications like Photoshop or Premiere will run well, too.

You should already have 1 gig (1024meg) of RAM for XP. It really takes up most of 512. I upgraded when i bought my comp to a gig, and i still have issues sometimes.

Vista will be EXTREMELY slow on 512....you may want to get 2 gigs for Vista

To run xp smoothly 512mb would do fine, but to run Vista smoothly without any problems you would need 1gb

512 is the minimum for vista. 1 gig is the recomended. Now you must remmeber the video card must have 128 dedicated video memory in order to run vista correctly.

1 Gb for XP 2GB for Vista MINIMUM if you use a lot of memory hungry applications and want smooth working even though both would work on less RAM.

THE MORE, THE BETTER.
