boss if I did contact his friend directly?

It depends on a lot of factors. If you are contacting them on business related matters, than you had better have a good reason to do it without okaying it with him. If you are contacting them socially, well.... only you and your boss's friends know the answer to that one.

I'd say yeah, unless you knew the friend before the boss. The boss just wants to cross all his t's and dot all his I's, I'm sure it's nothing against you.

Obviously. If he tells you not to contact his friends without permission, why would you do so without? That's a good way to lose your job, pal.

get it in writing then you can sue him if your in the USA......anything you do outside of working hours is your business.....
