Place a Downy, or whatever fabric softener sheet you use, under your heat/air vents. When the air blows, the smell goes throughout the house. I was having a horrible time getting smells gone until I tried this, and it works wonderfully!

Also try white vinegar in bowls in your most offending location. You'll get a vinegar smell initially but then you can reduce the amount you put out at a time. Its great to put out when you have to leave the house closed up when you go on a trip.
Your kitchen and laundry are your worst offenders unless you have pets. Just keep the kitchen clean, the garbage out of the house and the laundry washed. It seems simplistic. Your air ducts may need to be cleaned out. What type of smell is it that you don't like? Dampness or musty - dehumidifier.

My mom taught me this one if you can believe it, It really works.
Place 2 or 3 cereal sized bowls of white or ceder vinegar around your house for 2 or 3 days and the smells are gone. After the first day you won't notice the vinegar either. Works really good on cooking odors like fish but can use it for any thing. Then pour the vinegar down your kitchen drain to make it fresh.

Besides cleaning all areas, top to bottom with a disinfectant? Also air out (open windows) throughout the house on sunnier days. Occasionally burn good quality scented candles.

I like to use scented candles. It gives a nice scent without the use of aerosol fresheners. Also using a nice scented cleaner to mop the floors can help.

I am a realtor and a lot of people will put poppori on the stove with a little water and boil it for a bit! Also what about candles?
