Isn't it time for a comeback? My mum had one of the sort that opened from the front... great as long as no one parked too close in front of you!

In a way they have made a comeback as the Smart Car. The bubble cars were made in the 50's and 60's but they weren't very stable going round bends. We went on a group drive in the West country and the Isetta bubble car rolled over and nearly toppled into a gorge. Made a good town car though.

Heinkel, Messerschmitt, Think there were even more makes, Yes funny cute little things.
They were made at a time when money was scarce and provided dry reasonable transport to people that would otherwise use a motorcycle scooter or bus .
Rather a collectors item now . Wish i had room for one in the garage ,

They were lovely, did not take a lot of room, used little petrol and had great character. Perhaps a new edition could make a comeback if an alternative to the door design could be found.

I think that what your mother had was probably an Isetta. An Italian design, but also manufactured under licence by companies in other countries. BMW made them - Beemers have come on a bit in the last 50 years, haven't they? Maybe your Mum's was one of those, so she can say that she once owned a BMW!

If you look up "Isetta" in Wikipedia, there's a drawing, and the barmaid in "Heartbeat" used to drive round in one.

My uncle had an Izetta. There were a few different makes though. Some had front opening doors and no reverse. If you drove it into your garage and stopped too close to the back wall you had to wait for someone to come and rescue you.

I had one, a little Fiat 500 - it would go round corners on two wheels if no one was in the passenger seat to hold it down, but it was great fun to drive, I rarely seemed to have to put any petrol in it and never had any trouble finding a parking spot, it was so small.

Bubble car
did you ever watch that TV comedy programme about two Essex girls and their neighbour Dorian they had to pick one up from Germany, it was worth a lot of money, think they ended up stuck in a garage and couldn't open the doors

Yes, I remember. It was made in Italy and was a three wheeler, two seater and was called a "Romi Isetta".PS It was a side by side and
had a front opening door. Discontinued in the 60‘s.

Indeedy so, they where great, although I think they were around before my time really (ahem). I remember that someone used to have one on the popular TV show 'Heartbeat' with Nick Berry.

Yes they were really cute, but i like the Smart cars they are a more suitable up to date small car. I especially like them when they are pretty colours - like red with black spots, they look like little ladybirds!
