Honestly, for that price you could upgrade your computer to nuke the PS3 for that price. And as I've said before, you're going to have a rough time finding a PS3 in a retail store. For the price you'd pay on eBay, you could buy a Wii and a 360 and PS3 in a retail store.
Between those two options, right now the obvious best solution is to buy a Wii and pick up a PS3 over the summer or better yet next holiday season. I think their sales will plateau after they're got enough out for everyone who's dieing for one, everyone else is going to say "$600? Are you crazy?" They'll drop the price by the end of 2007.
So, the answer is unless you're nuts, like a lot of people are, get a Wii. Honestly, anyone who would even ask that question right now should get a Wii. The only people who should bother with the PS3 at this point are those people typing in all caps about how much everyone else should buy a PS3.
*edit* For the record, I am an avid gamer 25 years of age that can afford a PS3. I just can't justify that price or the time required to find one. If Sony wants my business, they'll have to get it on my terms.
Also the PS3 currently have 17 titles planned for release before the end of 2006. While Nintendo's is planned to be 34 by that time, not even including the downloadable classic games library. Sony is feeding off the misconceptions that even informed and intelligent gamers are holding. If you want a PS3, that's fine, but don't lie to yourself about it.. or at least don't misinform others.

Simply put, you shouldn't buy either system, nor should you buy an XBOX360. Why? Because it's too early to tell which system will be the best, and all three systems will go down in price by Christmas 2007.
Let me elaborate on my two points.
First, it's too early to tell which system will be the best in a variety of key "future" factors.
The most important "future" factor is the library of games. While XBOX360, with its one year head start, has developed a respectable library of games, PS3 and the Wii are untested in this department. In a year you can get a much better sense of what games are available for what system, and more importantly, which system has the best 3rd party support from game developers. I know one of the things that most annoyed me about GameCube was that many games made for the PS2 and XBOX weren't available because Nintendo had poor 3rd party support. That's not to say the Wii will suffer the same fate. A lot of factors go into good 3rd party support, from "corporate deals" to "ease of game development for a system". There's no way you can predict how this will turn out, and you shouldn't try. Just wait and see. Ultimately, you don't want to end up with a system that only has a few good games.
The second important "future" factor is online play. Once again, XBOX 360 has developed a nice showing in this department thanks to its one year head start. However, you have to give PS3 and Wii a chance to show what they can do online and how much they're going to charge you for it. Developing a good online system takes time, though. XBOX360's online play didn't work all its kinks out until recently. It will take Wii and PS3 at least 6 months to have things up and running smoothly. Plus, you have to also wait to see how many games each system will have that support robust online play.
The third "future" factor is the next gen DVD format wars, specifically HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray. This isn't so much an issue for Wii as it is for XBOX360 (which supports HD-DVD) and PS3 (which supports Blu-Ray). In the end, you don't want to spend $400 to $600 on what could essentially amount to a beta-max player. Once again, the only solution is to wait and see.
Those are the three main concerns about the 3 new systems that won't be answered until, at earliest, next Christmas.
Now, the second thing I mentioned was the price. It's a common corporate strategy during the holidays to lower the price of electronics that were introduced in the previous year. I am not saying the drop in price will be dramatic, but probably around $50 to $100 for the PS3 and $50 for the XBOX360. I don't see the Wii getting any cheaper than it already is.
I know it's hard to deny that gratification, but you'll be much better off in the long run if you wait.

Well, it all depends what kind of games you are interested in. The Playstation 3, while expensive, ($499, $599) is a system more for serious gamers. The games are definitely more in-depth, look better, are more gorey, and more captivating than most of the Wii's games. However, the Wii is a system that may also captivate the gamer, by forcing them to be active during the game play. (Ex. During tennis, you use the Wii's controller as a tennis racket.) The Wii is much cheaper ($249.99), but it will have a smaller selection of games, and is far less customizable than the Playstation 3. With the playstation 3's hard drive, you can install computer operating systems (Such as Linux, or Windows Vista.) I would recommend the Playstation 3, as the games are much more involved, and look better and play better than those on Nintendo's Wii. Remember, you may not get your hands on a Playstation 3 until after Christmas, as Sony will ship about 800,000 consoles by the end of this year.

Don't listen to people saying PS3 is for the "serious gamer". Graphics do not make a great sytem (remember 3DO?). It depends on the types of games you like. I own a Wii for my wife, who tends to (like myself) like platform games. I own a 360. Look in game mags like Game Informer to see how the types of games YOU play are being rated.
Most employees at Gamestop that I have asked prefer the Wii. Besides being cheaper, it is less likely to have the problems PS3 may experience (system seems to be in a high risk for problems). I plan on buying the PS3, but not until the price comes down.
Anyone who bases the "best" system off power alone is a beginner. I have Atari 2600 games I enjoy better than some PS2 games.
By the way, the Wii controller is so cool. Brings a whole new dimension to gaming.

Whatever you do, don't purchase a PS 3 (for at least another year).
The Wii is an extremely fun, and cheap (in comparison) system, and if you aren't a hardcore gamer, get it. But, if you are able to find and purchase one, make sure to get a warranty on it. Many first editions of systems have bugs that get worked out over the next 6 months or so.
But if you don't have a 360, and have the money, get it. It's going to be your best bet unless you are dieing to have the newest technology.

right now, if you bought a ps3 it'll cost you about $2500 on ebay. i'd say buy a wii now and wait a year for the ps3 or buy a wii and a 360. the new zelda by itself is a good reason to choose wii, every review i've seen has said it's the best in the series.
also, wii is going to have 35+ games before 2007, ps3 won't have nearly as many.

Wii hands down, we got one for our son today and the new innovative controller revolutionizes gaming as we know it. I absolutely love it and my son loves it so much he wants to dump is PS2 games and system to buy more accessories and games for the Wii. The potential exercise from this machine is great, and the controller works a lot better than I thought it would. The sports game is very addictive, Zelda has good graphics and game play. Wii all the way, Sony is in trouble.

Instead of buying the PS3, use your money and buy a Wii and an Xbox 360

Depends on price. I do believe that the PS3 has got most games made for that console. Nintendo Wii has only a few.. I guess PS3 could be good if you are willing to pay for it.
