unfortunately Conservatives such as sway are making it much more difficult for people like you and I to speak freely and openly on whatever subject we see fit. The right to free speech is important, otherwise we would live in a police state. That is why it is important, we need to avoid Martial law, something many people are afraid Bush is capable of.

I allows individuals to participate in the political process, and their private lives, without govt control.

Freedom of expression (speech or religion), freedom of belief and assembly, even the freedom to sue in court -- these ensure that people cannot be silenced for dissenting and cannot be forced to repeat govt propoganda against their will. It allows people to think and to be heard, which is an essential component of a free society.
