My sister in laws father (God rest his soul) always said that he should never have to ask for money back that was borrowed. He never asked. But if the person never repaid him he would never help them again. Maybe if u use the same technique it will work. Never ask for the money back. If they dont repay there may come a day where they need money again, if they ask u u say NO. I am still waiting for u to pay me back the last time I lent u some money. It does work. I will either make them pay u back out of being embarassed or they will never ask for money again. Which is, by the way, a good trade off.

You should make it really casual like "Oh darn, I forgot I need to get gas on the way home and don't have any cash, do you happen to have that $20 you owe me? It would really help." Hopefully it's a small amount like that, otherwise I think you should just remind them that they borrowed the money and it would be great to have it back to go christmas shopping so that you don't have to take it out of your bank account.

Really there isn't a nice way. You can say that you need the money back because your running short, and sometimes they feel like they're helping you out so its less pushy. If you feel like they're not going to give the money back then don't lend it to them again. Also if you don't get your money back then count it a lost cause and move on. If it helps I hope you get your money back!

Did they borrow it from you or is it, like, say you bought lunch and they said they'd pay you..on thursday, etc?
Unfortunately, you'll have to be direct---and say "Hey, Lois--remember that 100$ I lent you 2 months ago--well I just got my electric bill and I really could use it--do you think you could cut me a check on payday?"
Or if it was for lunch, then you say "Hey Lois--how about salads today for lunch--your treat, hon, since you owe me from the burgers last week"
And make a mental note NEVER EVER to loan money again.

Well, you could ask if they have any extra money that they can spare to help pay you back on what they have borrowed from you. That right now any little bit would help out.
If they can't, ask them if they get any extra money in could they please think of you in your time of need right now.
Seems to me, you have helped them out in the time of need...so now maybe you can get them to loOK at it that way. They may think that your ok and is not worried about it.
If they don't have money, maybe they can pawn something to help get your money back. Most usually everyone has something they can part with.
Good Luck

Not much info but they should know if they owe you money or not. Just tell them. Hey Jack, remember that $20 you owe me?

You can be pleasant and tactful but you should most definitely do it, like: "I'm really in need now of "x" amount of money (the amount they owe you). Are you in a situation where you can return the sum to me?" You are entitled to see your own money back! Good Luck!
p.s. I did it before and it worked.

Tell them the Mexicans have a saying---it's, "tome chocolate y paga lo que debes." Translation: Drink chocolate and pay what you owe.
