Actually, the first rights to this song belong to a band called Manfred Mann and his Earth band, but the song was actually written by the boss, Bruce Springsteen. He couldn't publish or record the actual song though, due to a record company lawsuit filed against him at the time.

Bruce wrote and recorded the song first. His was NOT a hit. The hit was by Manfred Mann. Steve Miller has never recorded this song, unless they've performed it live. Easily confusing though. :-)
