Using your 8 fingers and 2 thumbs.. the keyboard is laid out so that the most popular letters are easy to access quickly. QW ZX PL are all on the corners of the keyboards. All the vowels are under or above the 8 main finger positions (ASDF and JKL:)

i disagree i heard that its in order of most used letters starting with the A in the middle row

Good Question.
They were set up to learn to type like that.
I'd be confused if they were in alphebetical order!

the layout of our standard key board is set up so that you don't type too fast. the original typewriters would get gummed up if one was to type too fast...
