I mean, I'm a junior in hs and I'm not allowed to do alot of stuff. For instance, I'm not allowed to get my ears pierced and I cant pick out a movie without my parents bombarding me with questions. on top of that, i've never seen an R rated movie. What are the disadvantages or advantages of having overprotective parents?

The pros are, that you have parents who love you and you are a lot less likely to get in trouble.

The cons are that often children who are overprotected go crazy when they get out into the real world or college or are a little 'needier' than others.

I think the suggestion of getting a job is a pretty good one. It's a nice way to gain some freedom, learn skills, and show your parents that you are trustworthy. Another idea would be to sit down with your parents and dicsuss it maturely, no yelling or fighting.

Just remember, overprotection is usually done out of love. As a parent, of babies, I can't even imagine how scary it must be to be the parent of a teen. They only want you to be safe!

The disadvantages of having overprotecting parents are being sheltered, not being exposed to things that possibly benefit you when you are by yourself in the real world. The advantages of having overprotective parents is they just want the best for you, no harm behind that. But the thing is, if you feel like you are missing out on a lot of things, then you need to let your parents know. You have the right to have some fun too. That is all a part of being a teenager.

I feel sorry for you. Being overprotected like that ruins your friendships and your life. I am also a junior in HS and i was watching R rated movies at the age of 9. I have turned out fine. Your parents need to losen up a little or both you relationship with your friends and parents will get screwed over.

The disadvantages is that you get a twelve-year old girl on the internet telling you of how she got her ears pierced when she was six, had seen plenty of R rated movies by the time she was five, and sees movies all the time. You don't know how to survive the real world, and you'll become too dependent on people and won't learn how to pick yourself up when you fall. You won't know the meaning of success.
The advantages?
You'll always have people doing things for you.

In general never "over" is good. But over protection is much better than under protection.

I can understand your parent protecting you. They are caring you so they protect you from any kinds of harm. Even if sometimes it doesn't seem to you logical, should accept it as a token of love and care.

AWW GIRL ITS KEWL! I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL AND HOW BAD IT SUCKS! YOU CANT GO TO A FRIENDS HOUSE WITHOUT THEM CALLING YOU ON YOUR CELL PHONE EVERY 3 MINUTES TO SEE WHERE YOU ARE AND WHAT YOUR DOING AND WHEN YOUR GOING TO BE HOME...YEAH IT SUCKS...BAD!!!! BUT IN A WAY I GUESS ITS OK.....MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE A TALK WITH YOUR PARENTS. ASK THEM TO LOOSEN THE CHAIN ALITTLE BIT. I MEAN THEY CAN STILL BE PROTECTIVE, BUT THEY NEED TO LET YOU MAKE YOUR OWN MISTAKES AND DEAL WITH THEM ON YOUR OWN...THATS HOW YOU BECOME SOCIALLY EDUCATED. DID YOU DO SOMETHING THAT MADE THEM LOOSE YOUR TRUST?
2 YEARS AGO, I WAS CAUGHT MAKING OUT WITH MY BOYFRIEND.....MY PARENTS HAVENT TRUSTED ME SINCE. AND IM 16! I KINDA HAVE AN ADVANTAGE NOW THO. SINCE IM ABLE TO DATE.....MAYBE YOU CAN GET A JOB, SHOW THEM THAT YOUR RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO LET THEM LOOSEN THE CHAIN AND LET YOU DO MORE WITHOUT THE CONSULTANT. IT WORKS =)

It sounds to me that your parents are aware and protective as they should be, but not overprotective.

Consider that most kids have parents who don't have a clue (liberals most often), and fail to protect their children from the world.

Look, you don't know how lucky you are. Love them, thank them and thank God that you have them.
