Hookah bars have been popping up around the country, including East Lansing's soon-to-be-opened Blue Midnight Hookah Lounge, under construction at 330 Albert Ave. Although the tobacco used with hookahs only produces a mild relaxing effect, young people are often attracted by the social atmosphere. The flavored tobacco is smoked through a pipe with a water-filled base.
But as with using any kind of tobacco, health risks are involved. Hazards include the risk of cancer and exposure to pollutants and carcinogens such as carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine and heavy metals, said Dru Szczerba, the director of cancer prevention at the American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Road. . . .
"Fundamentally, its mystic appeal and the sociable nature make it a sought-after trend," said Kabir Agarwal, a 2006 MSU alumnus.
