On tv and films, why is it that when a couple have an argument, he takes a duvet and goes to sleep on a very uncomfortable couch, when they live in a huge house with at least 4 bedrooms? Are they just looking for sympathy?

Do they have at least 4 bedrooms? Sometimes they've only got the one bed.
But yes, when there's a lot of other bedrooms, it's "Poor me, look what evil you has made me do."

It's just a cliche of American life. Also a sympathy ploy. The couple of times either my husband or I have done that in 37 and a half years we went to our recliners. I sleep good there as it is.

pS I have never used the word duvet in a real sentence. :o)

Because it is tv and films. It is not reality. If a man takes his blanket and runs to the couch when there are open beds in the house, he is an idiot. Might want to ask the writers of the shows you are seeing this happen.

Because the producers want to emit a heavy sense of punishment on the husband/boyfriend. They want the viewers to understand that he is being disciplined in a way, and by him being forced to sleep on an uncomfortable couch exhibits that sense of chastisement. It wouldn't appear harsh enough if the husband was forced to sleep in the queen sized bed in the penthouse.

Also in American films after a wild night of sex doing everything imaginable when he or she gets out of bed they always wrap the duvet round their body, strange!!!

being kicked out of the bedroom means you are not worthy of sleeping in a comfortable bed so you get the lumpy couch!

i think that they do it just to show a state of mind. like they have been kicked out, you wouldnt think twice if they were kicked out of their bed and went to sleep in a nice bed. no sympathy there!

They probably don't have another set for the extra bedroom.
