Don't ewe know? They do, they used to be 12 feet high and 20 feet long.Seriously you seem to have washed it correctly but did you hang it out wringing wet the weight of the water in the jumper may have made it stretch.Or did you wring it out by twisting it ?This could have stretched it .

Honestly? Your wool jumper shouldn't shrink if washed in cool water and laid flat to dry. I've washed lots of wool in this manner, and it's never shrunk.

Wool shrinks because of hot water and hot dryers.

If it rained hot water & detergent, the sheep's wool would probably shrink.

Lastly, a sheep's coat is filled with lanolin, which is waterproof.
I met a man who was once a sheep-shearer (in New Zealand).
He had the *softest* hands I have ever felt!

It's hot water and agitation which caused shrinkage, that's why wool should be washed in lukewarm water with a gently spin.

So you would have to put a sheep in a hot wash with a high spin to cause any real damage.

Two reasons: firstly, the natural wool is waterproofed with a greasy fat called lanolin, that has to be removed to make knitting wool; secondly, the natural wool has not been spun and knitted, so the fibres do not tighten up on themselves to cause shrinkage.

Because the lanolin in their wool makes them waterproof.

for the same reason that cows (suede and leather) doesn't stain in the rain.

When wool is made into things it is stretched hince the shrinkage
