I was homeless once and in order to get my food stamps I had to tell them where I slept at night. For instance a homeless person may use the bridge under Main St as his address etc. In order to get my food stamps in the mail I had to use general delivery and I would just go to the post office and show ID to get my mail.

There are very few true homeless. Many of the people your thinking of live in some from of government housing. The true homeless or people that live under Bridges and tents can not get SSI. Many of them do not want to live in government housing or can not because they will not live by the rules. As in no drugs no fighting and so on. They move place to place. They live for their next fix or next drink. They could have it better if they could just stop the drugs.

good question,
I'm not entirely sure that they all collect
but many homeless people do have an address which is given to them through the council but it isn't a fixed address.
most of the people you tend to see on the streets are the alcoholics who lay about and by night they go back to there residence

They probably either use a friend or relatives address or use the address of a local homeless shelter or some other organization that allows them to receive their mail there.

for example, the downtown area of los angeles has a few homeless shelters and these shelters usually will take down the name of the homeless person. the reason being, so the shelter can get government grants and so fourth... the shelter gets money for helping the homeless and the person can get their benefits. i believe that's how it works.

Yes it really p!sses me off. So much in fact that I'm tempted to take my dog and walk away from a fifty grand a year job, dump all the associated financial problems onto the new immigrant "tax payer". I'll sit on a street corner with a sign saying "My dog is hungry, please help me feed her". I'll get rich from the indigenous population who care more about the welfare of an animal than they do about politicians destroying their country and culture.

Some benefit checks can be made out to a third party payee if the actual recipient can't handle his own affairs

in my experience, with great difficulty!
we were homeless, living as best we could with a 13 year old son to think about...trying to find accomodation...warmth...shelter....
not everyone whos on the streets is there through their own choice, society today has a lot to answer for!
