x = first integer

x + 1 = second integer

x + 2 = Third integer

5x = 5 times the first

4(x + 2) = 4 times the third integer

- 4 = the results

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The equation

5x + x + 1 + 4(x + 2) = - 4

5x + x + 1 + 4x + 8 = - 4

10x + 9 = - 4

10x + 9 - 9 = - 4 - 9

10x = - 13

10x/10 = - 13/10

x = - 13/10

x = - 1 3/10

x = - 1.3

Insert the x value into the equation

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

5x + x + 1 + 4(x + 2) = - 4

5(- 1.3) + (-1.3) + 1 + 4(- 1.3 + 2) = - 4

- 6.5 - 0.3 + 4(0.7) = - 4

- 6.8 + 2.8 = - 4

- 4 = - 4

the integersare

- 1.3, 0.3. 0.7

integers are: x, x + 1, x + 2
4 times the third: 4(x + 2)
5 times the first: 5x
5x - 4(x + 2) = -4
distribute
5x - 4x - 8 = -4
combine like terms
x = 4

the integers are:
4, 5, 6

Parenthesis are important! my math teacher would flip if i didnt put them in
integers are: (x), (x + 1), (x + 2)
4 times the third: 4(x + 2)
5 times the first: 5(x)
5(x) - 4(x + 2) = -4
distribute
5x - 4x - 8 = -4
combine like terms
x = 4

the integers are:
4,5,6

say the integers are a, b, c.
5c - 4b = -4
c - b = 1

find c and b, then find a by subtracting 1 from b
