The Internet Service Provider I m using right now (Sify Broadband) has started a new sick thing, they keep popping up a page from a URL that looks like http://210.210.4.74:81/payment.html... This stupid pop up reminds u to pay ur ISP charges on time which i already do. This thing keeps popping anyways and makes me sick.. is there way I can stop it from popping up.. I m on Windows XP Professional and am using Trend Micro Office Scan provided by the ISP to all its users.

If you are using a reputable ISP then they should have an opt-out clause. Usually, it is a link which, when clicked on, asks users if they want to discontinue receiving promotions and ads from the ISP. I use Earthlink and they have sent countless messages advertising their other services. If you fail to find the opt-out clause, you can call them by telephone and ask them to stop sending pop up messages to your account.

In Internet Explorer, you can block a particular website. However, since this is your own ISP, I am not sure if it will work. But, the process is easy and harmless. From the menu bar Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab > click [Sites] > enter the IP address you mentioned before (enter only the numbers without http:// > click [Block] > [O.K.} > [Apply> Restart IE.

Change the security and privacy settings on your web browser. Tools->internet options->privacy tab. Under it their should be a check box 'block pop-ups'. This will only block a small amount, but it helps. Next go into the security tab. Highlight the globe image, representing the internet, and then there should be a button on the page to adjust your security level. Raise it up a bit. You can also customize your security settings by selecting what you will allow and not allow. Be very careful about accepting cookies, spyware uses cookies to get information about you. Spyware has a tendacy to create a lot of pop-up windows, so if you can't seem to get rid of the pop-ups chances are your PC is infected with spyware. You should always make a habbit of getting rid of spyware on your pc. The spyware sweeper I use, which I think is excellent is called Webroot I bought it at BestBuy, but you can probably get a better deal online. Don't download any free web browser tools, they are loaded with spyware! Be wary of any pop up windows telling you 'your PC is infected download free software to get rid of spyware' many of these programs are spyware themselves.
