My friend wants to travel by ferry with me to France, then to Spain but he doesn't have a passport. He does have a UK driving licence. Will this do or must he have a passport as well?

Yes he will need a passport to go from England to France and then into Spain.
We drove last year and they checked our passports on leaving the UK, when we crossed the boarder from France to Spain and again on the way back.
Also, if you are driving you need all the car documents etc...

They are very thorough too!

I've added some usefull websites.

You will need a passport. You may have heard that people travelled through immigration controls without current passports or European ID cards. This was the case in the mid 90s ( I did this when I lost my passport in Rotterdam in a canal but showed my university card) - actually - if I remember they didn't ask us to get out of the car and were not bothered. This has now changed - so have I - I am now working in UK immigration

I live in France and i cab tll you that the ferries definatelyrequire a passport...however, the budget airlines only ask for photo ID. obviously it is legal for photo ID to be accepted otherwise the airlines would not be allowed to accept it...with the ferries it is purely their policy. Hope this helps..

He needs a passport to enter and leave the schengen area ( uk in not part of it). Then, he will be free to travel anywhere within the schengen area. France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Italy, etc... are part of it

Yes I thought we all neeed a passport these days. I remember you could get a temporary one from the Post Office but it was stopped which was probably a good thing.

If you are a British citizen you will need a passport because you are crossing international borders. One of the previous answers says that the U.K is not part of the E.U. I'm sure you know that's incorrect.
