I've done the drive from DC to LA twice. Once in the winter and once in the summer. The best way in December would be to go through Oklahoma City. From Las Vegas take I40 to OKC, from there you will take several different main interstates through Memphis and on up to NYC. The reason I say to do this is if you go through Denver you can run into some major problems from weather as you go north into Utah then over the Rockies to Denver and through the plains states. If you take a more southerly route then you may not have the difficulties with weather. Have a wonderful trip, I enjoyed mine so much!

I will absolutely agree with the first two answers. Make your way to I-40 and head west. Be prepared to see wide open spaces like you've never seen before from Texas all the way to Las Vegas.
