the chemical definition of salt is Sodium Chloride, its chemical formula is NaCl, this is a sodium molecule ionically bonded to a chlorine one. The sodium gives the chlorine an extra electron which allows both atoms to have a full outer shell, the molecule is then held together by charges as each atom becomes charged. The Sodium becomes positively charged and the Chlorine becomes negatively charged, because opposite charges attract this keeps the compund together.

During neutralization the products are salt and water. (acid + base --> salt + water) Salt is basically an ionic compound - formed of a cation and an anion. Salts can be neutral, acidic, or basic.
