They can't be suspended just for mentioning the word "God", only if they were to disrupt class or other school activities by getting up and praying, or trying to force their religion on other kids. And it would probably not be a suspension, but a talk w/a teacher or administrator. (They might be believers, too!).
The teachers should calmly inform them that God is a subject for church, mosque or Synagogue, not school (unless, later, they study religion in an historic context, say in college or high school).
Just tell your kids that school isn't an appropriate place for worship--they're there to learn. They should be taught to respect the Separation of Church and state. If you don't like this, then send them to a religious school, and it won't be a problem.
While you're at it, you should make them aware that not everyone in their town or neighborhood believes what they do and they should respect differences and not taunt others. (My kid got told by another 4-year-old that he was going to hell, since he didn't go to their church! I told the other child that we did not discuss religion in our house with other people's kids).

I am confused by the question. Is it that your kids need to discuss the holiday or write a report on it? And which holiday Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Either way there is a story as to why ppl celebrate each tradition. You can safely explain the two different stories in a non judgemental way.
In my family we discuss and acknowlege all faiths and religious celebrations as they come up thereby teaching my children the wonders of diversity. Nothing is cramed down their throats but i do want them to be aware of the beauty in everyone's belief.
Feel free to e mail me directly with your answers and I will be happy to help you out.

I can't really answer your question, I'm bringing my kids up in the Christian tradition as this is my religion! I'd never complain if a Muslim, Sikh, Jew or any other religion talked about their beliefs in school so long as they weren't trying to foist it on others, so don't really understand the level of P.C. when it comes to Christianity now!
