To the fish? To us? To other earth inhabitants? To a God that sheds tears? To the philosophers and ethicists who decry the taking of life? To vegans who think eating any flesh is nasty but carrots feel no pain?
More to the point, are commercial fishers over-doing it and about to bring about a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions?
No, I don't think fishing is cruel. I think it was cruel of God to make us dependent on other lifeforms for our own continuation. I think it is cruel of man to destroy his fellow man and himself. I think it is cruel how many will taunt and mock you with their answers to this question.
Have I also been cruel here? But at least not a single fish was harmed in the making of this answer.

Please don't take this wrong but I am just questioning the rationality of the true answer. If we fish to feed the poor and white in the US - it is cruel and unusual punishment. If we fish to feed the poor in Africa, then we are applauded and revered as saints here on Earth. Both should be the same as we are feeding the poor. The fact that they differ this much makes me question the sanity of the entire world.

if you just go out there and kill just bc u can, thats cruel but if you kill then eat the fish, then no. but i hate fish so i dont have to worry about that. except i like the fisherboy fishsticks and fried shrimp. anyway, kill just because = yes; kill and eat = no

well in a sense yes. making fish eat a disgusting worm and then die. that's nice. once they get a wonderful piece of worm or whatever, they die. you think that's cruel? 'cause it is!
