They are not. Some movies premier on Wednesdays. I believe most come out on Friday because it is the beginning of the weekend and many people will be able to go to the movies.

the weekends are the big days for the entertainment industry. films are premiered on Wednesday occasionally, but that's usually if the film has a TON of hype around it (War of the Worlds) or it's the Wednesday before a long weekend.

because people work during the week, and are less likely to see a film in large numbers. by opening Friday most don't have to work on Sat. and more people can see it at once, which makes more money and also makes that money look bigger if earned in 3 days(Fri-sat-sun) than if they open on a Monday and spread the money over the whole week. if you recall The Omen Remake opened during the week, and what little it did in business looked even sadder with the extra 2 days of ticket sales.

Because most people get off on the weekends, so they can stay out at the movies late night on fridays

Many people get paid on Friday,so are easily suckered into the ridiculous prices the theaters charge.

In France the movies are premiered on Wednesday.
I think it's because they don't have to interfered with week-end events.
I think it's the same reason in US.

and then DVDs always come out on tuesdays, i agree wiht the ppl about friday, cuz ppl get paid friday. but why do DVDs come out on tuesdays?
