Calm down..if you have a vaginal sonogram the probe is NOT inserted..it is just placed in the vaginal area...no penetration...

It probably won't be an internal exam... however, being a vaginismus sufferer myself, I can understand your anxiety. I was pregnant through the disorder as well, and requested that there be NO internal exam throughout my pregnancy.

If the doctor insists on an internal, explain to the technician about your disorder and request that they go very slowly. Breathe out through your mouth as they push the probe in. Once it's in, you will surprisingly be fine. I still shake like a leaf with the anticipation of an internal, but once the thing is in, I'm ok with the exam.

btw - when you go into labor, request your epidural immediately. Then, everytime a doctor or nurse walks in to check on you, request an internal exam. (You won't feel it, and it will stretch your vaginal area)

Good luck!

I didn't know the did inject anything into you, it was just a gel and then the sound wave thing? Oh well, ermm... oh yeah. Don't be scared huni, it can be daunting but really its not that big of a deal and just think, tomorrow you're going to see your baby for the first time and see it move and everything, it will be very emotional and special for you, and even if the first part is scary, that's just a second, then you'll forget all about it. Good luck and congratulations

The only time I had to have a vaginal ultrasound was the first one, at 6 weeks along, because the embryo at that time is usually too small to see with the regular ultrasound. At 4 months, I don't see why they would need to use a vaginal ultrasound.

well you really need to discuss this with your doctor before you have the exam done. If it is absolutely necessary for your baby then unfortunately you'll have to do it... (part of being a mom is knowing that you are second in line of importance now, the baby is first.) but being that you have this fear the doctor may be able to examine you just with the ultra sound. make sure to tell your doctor- although it will be embarrassing to tell the doctor about your fear it is important.
Good luck to you.

an ultrasound is done from the outside. they put some freezing cold k-y -like jelly on your belly and scan it with something that looks like a huge electric razor. i know you're embarrassed, but you need to sit down and talk to your doctor if he didn't even explain what the ultrasound would be.....

Calm down. If your 16 weeks its highly unlikely they will do a vaginal ultrasound. What you can expect is them to do a regular one which they rub ky jelly on your belly and run a probe on your belly. This doesn't hurt, you will be fine.

When I was pregnant I had two ultrasound tests done and neither was internal. It was fascinating to see pictures of my son!

A usual ultrasound will be performed on your belly not in your vagina, unless they are checking something else out. Tell your doctor about your fears. He will help you.....
