It is a set of numbers arranged in a triangle. The first number which is located in the apex of the triangle is one. The next series of numbers under it is one, and one again. The third row of numbers is one, two and one. Then, one, 3, 3, and one. If you continue this, it would look like
1
1 1
1 2 1
1 3 3 1

And if you will notice, the 1st term and last term is always one. The second term is the sum of the previous numbers of the previous row. If you continue the trend, then the 4th row is 1, 4, 6, 4, 1.

Pascal's triangle is:
1
1 1
1 2 1

The triangle gives the coefficients of the binomial expansion. For example,

(x + y)^5

has six terms when expanded. Their coefficients are 1, 5, 10, 10, 5, and 1.

The triangle also gives results in combinatorics. How many different teams of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 people can be selected from among 5 people? 1, 5, 10, 10, 5, and 1. Notice that selecting "teams" of 1 person out of 5 is the same as selecting teams of 4 out of 5. There are 5 "teams" either way.

You add the two numbers above to get the next number. The sides are always 1 becuase there is only 1 and 0, which add to 1. I tried to make the triangle, but it would'nt let me.
