The only way for me to answer this fundamental question is in a specific way. And it took me far too long to learn the real value of good manners. What I now realize is that I benefit enormously when people use good manners when dealing with me. I do not mean exaggerated or 'artificial' good manners. I mean real, good manners. One example of good manners is allowing another person to finish their sentences. This is especially important when you are performing a joint task. If you are practised at good manners, such as respecting the thoughts and feelings of others, then it is easier to communicate clearly. When you communicate clearly learning is faster and more complete. The result is there is less error between people.

Bad manners often lead to serious mistakes followed by serious misunderstanding between people. It is very disrespectful to not listen properly to others. Bad manners show a deep disregard for the life of another, not only their feelings and ideas, but also their well-being. We do not like it when others threaten or disregard our well-being. Therefore we should not disregard or threaten the well-being of others if it is at all possible. Repect relaxes the heart. Bad manners make the heart tense and mistrustful. Bad manners wastes energy and often causes confusion. Good manners are more productive because good manners are more co-operative and tend to support good methods of doing things. A more co-operative approach actually allows more to be accomplished. Bad manners tend to stem from selfishness. Selfishness tends to work short term, but long term selfishness is exhausting.

The more important and valuable my time becomes, the more valuable good manners become because good manners conserve energy and waste less time.

Valuable question!
