The entire 9-11 disaster did not affect my thoughts regarding flying at all.
Like getting into a car, every mode of transportation has risks involved. Some are mechanical, some are human errors, and yes, in the case of United 175 and American 11 and the rest, terrorism.
People still take the trains after the bombings in Madrid. London continued to function as normal during the IRA blitz.
Defiant or naive, I am not sure, but flying in the days right after 9-11 were likely the safest the air travel have ever seen protected from terrorism. Remember, within 2 months almost to the day, a fully loaded aircraft crashed into Queen's New York and that was not terrorist related.

Um.. I'd rather be in a plane that disintegrates on impact than a gruesome train accident-- you know where everyone's bloody screaming and passing dead infants hand over fist, people are drowning upside down in shallow streams, with body parts and excited feces all over.
I think everyone wishes for a quick death.
If it's going to be a tractor trailer ramming into my car, dying of frostbite running cross-country-- you know I'll pick the 'horrific' plane accident. It just looks dramatic.

I've never flown since then. I'm not sure if I ever will regardless of the supposed improved security.

It didn't. I prefer to fly, if I can.
Unfortunately it has gotten to expensive.
