He cries when he 'bears down' and I've seen a small amount (smear) of new blood upon passing his little poop. Sorry to be graphic but it's a real concern!!!

Look at his diet to see which foods may be causing this. Common culprits are rice cereal, bananas, cooked carrots, apples, cheese, yogurt, bread, pasta and potato.

Instead, try giving him apricots, pears, plums and peas, which can help loosen his stools. Visit http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/baby-constipation.html where there is lots of advice about dealing with constipation.

I would put in a call to the dr. but two things that I would recommend would be to 1. use accupressure on him. There are charts that you could use to help you find which areas are relived by pressing firmly in each area. Under the big toe is supposed to relieve constipation. I do that for a few minutes every other day and my son will have a b.m. that day. You can also rub clockwise around his bellbutton. 2. gripe water is supposed to help relieve constipation. You can find it at most health food stores.

Him being 8 months old there is not alot you can do, but you can give him about 3 ozs. of apple juice. This will loosen him up. It could take a little while for it to work, but do this about twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night.

I suggest you give him some prune juice. It will make it softer and easier to have a bowel movement. If this doesn't work, just keep the fluids in him to loosen it all up. My son has a problem using the bathroom too but prune juice or apple juice will get him to go. If he's starting to eat real food, just make sure he has a drink with him to really work through his digestive system and not bind him up.

Did you recently change his milk? If you switched from breast or formula to cows milk he may be experiencing some difficulties with digesting it. You may want to switch to soy or non-dairy for a few days and see if that helps. In the mean time try a little bit of Karo Syrup in his bottle. It will help to loosen things up a bit. There are also stool softeners for babies but be sure to check with your pediatrician first. Give them a call tomorrow and let them know the problem, as they are the best source of answers to this type of problem.

When i was a newborn, i couldn't poop (but i was just hatched, you know). The doctor told my parents to stick a birthday candle up my butt! I'm not kidding. Apparently it worked, but I still have that story told to me every once in awhile. Prune juice will get rid of almost ANY constipation, believe me! But, you might get diarrhea, so beware.
