A cot is the inverse of a tan, and is used to determine the correct distance in a triangle of the opposite side of the triangle when multiplied by the adjacent side of the triangle. it only works on right triangles. If you know the long line then you can determine the short side. If you know the short side then you can determine long side. You can also use signs and cosine to determine the same information. there will be a slight difference in the answers. using tan and cot is considered to be more accurate.
