Real points are not earned, they are purchased. You can buy them from the XBL marketplace menu, 1600 are about $20 US. Or you can go to a store like Best Buy or Target and buy a card with a serial number. Enter the serial number into XBL marketplace and it will add the points to your account.

Microsoft has hinted that in the future they will allow things that earn you points, but as of now there are none. One example they gave is allowing people to make skins for car games, etc. and sell them for a few points. The points are transferred to your account, which you can then spend in whatever is it that you want. They will probably use the points too as currency for the new video distribution service that will launch this week.

The reason why you have to buy points instead of paying directly with a credit card? Because credit card transactions under $5 don't add up for Microsoft. By letting you buy the points you can spend them in things that would add up to less than $5 in real money. For example, gamer picture packs are 150 points, which is $1.87 in real money. Registering XBL Arcade games costs 800 on average, which is about $10, competitive against shareware flash games.
