Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

You don't need to have aol to have active virus shield. All you need is an email address.

nope, that's just propaganda put out by AOL to keep people subscribing to overpriced internet access
If you have a yahoo email account, it comes with a good virus detector, and I discovered if I leave my mail account open, Yahoo sends me these cute little pop ups that tell me a virus was discovered and cancellation to that site is reccommended. (among the users of my computer, my setting is the only one with this perk)
