Airlines are sometimes unwilling to carry women who are past their 28th week of pregnancy because of the risk of premature labour.

Flying during pregnancy can slightly increase your risk of thrombosis (blood clots) and varicose veins. Wearing support stockings (not tights, which increase your risk of developing thrush) when you fly will help keep your circulation flowing and relieve swollen veins. Scholl also make knee-high socks which are specially designed for flying called Flightsocks (find them at www.schollflightsocks.co.uk). For maximum protection, put the stockings or socks on before you get out of bed in the morning and keep them on all day.

I see no problems but the airline must be informed otherwise they might not let her on the plane (I've seen a pregnant woman be turned away because the airline didn't know she was pregnant when she booked the flight) and I would also consult the pregnant woman's doctor before I booked the flight, there may be reasons the doctor doesn't want her flying at that time.

Our Dr. said it was fine up until 28 weeks. My wife flew for 4.5 at 25 weeks. Extea walking and stretching is advised. It's not that flying is bad for mother or baby. The airlines don't like it because if anything happens they have to do an emergency landing.

As long as the pregnancy has no complications. I flew 4 hours when I was 6 months without any trouble. I also flew 12 hours to Hawaii when I was 4 months. Check with the doctor, if you are worried at all.

This is BA's advice - other airlines may have slightly different policies:

For uncomplicated single pregnancies, we restrict travel beyond the end of the 36th week, and for twins, triplets etc., beyond the end of the 32nd week.

After your pregnancy has entered its 28th week, we ask that you carry with you a letter from your doctor or midwife, stating the pregnancy is uncomplicated and confirming the expected date of delivery. In this letter, your doctor should state that you are in good health, that they are happy for you to fly, and that (in their opinion) there is no reason why you cannot fly.

My doctor said I could fly up to 28 weeks. Just make sure she gets up about once an hour and drinks plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Yes, at 5 months pregnant it is ok to fly.
BUT each airline varies with their requirements, so it's best to check!!!
I would also recommend she visits her doctor before you go, there are still factors you need to consider and a doctor can advise you better than we can.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday!
