The US is a republic since we do not vote directly for our federal laws but rather vote for representatives who will determine the laws by which we live. We do not have a democracy which exists only in a few small places, I think in Vermont or New Hampshire where the voters actually vote on everything.
For the rest of us, even at local levels, we vote on the people who will decide for us.

A republic is a nation with out monarchy, or Prime Minister. The head of state of a republic is elected by the citizens of that country, and is generally called a "president".
The earliest recorded republic is that of the Greeks, and arguably the most famous ancient republic was the early Roman Republic.

A republic is when the people get to vote, and you're governed by a ruling body that look out for your interests.
There's not necessarily a President. There wasn't one in the Roman Republic.

In a broad definition, a republic is a state or country that is led by people whose political power is based on principles that are not beyond the control of the people of that state or country.
There are several other definitions available. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic
Here's a really good site about how deceptive that word is and more information about different types and definitions. (just so you know, it's not a government of elected officials.)

A state without a monarch or royal family, normally meaning the head of government is also the head of state (queen is head of state in UK, PM is head of government, but the US President is head of state AND government).
