5th grd homewerk help?

my little sisters buggin me "tonla counted 16 cats and birds. she also counted 46 legs total. how many of each animal did tonla see?" plz its really annoying

x + y = 16
2x + 4y = 46

multiply the 1st equation by 2 to get
2x + 2y = 32
2x + 4y = 46

subtract to get
-2y=-14

y=7 (cats)
x=9 (birds)
