If the press had to prove the truth, would we have known about Watergate, the nature of the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, or any other covert activity, public or private?

I tend to think many people can't handle the truth. It doesn't seem that many people pay attention to sources cited. Even a Fox News link that doesn't support their point of view is discounted by the highly partisan. Even Watergate was considered by many to be a left conspiracy-still is by some. I do think lots of real news, real facts, begins with leaks....

If we, as the general public, didn't relish "smut" so much, we might get more truth!

Just say no to untruths with your dollars and don't buy into media outlets who lie and manipulate the truth and believe me, it will stop.

We may have no "news" left, but it will stop. Same with sensationalism such as John Mark Karr and O J Simpson. As long as we continue to "pay" for it, we will continue to get it.

I'm a journalist.
I don't know what rock you and the majority of the answerers crawled out of, but whatever news we present, we have to be able to name our sources and "prove" the truth as you put it if a story is questioned.

This just proves my point that the majority of the population hasn't got a clue about the media or how they work. Folks, the media are pertinent to preserving and defending your first amendment rights. Read my previous question:
