It seems like a lot of bass players adjust the guitar strap so that it hangs right to wear it looks like they are fingering their crotch with every note. Why do they do that?

Don't you think it's a little obscene?

If you are a bass player, do you do that?

Yeah, that became "cool" or something in the eighties with the hair bands I believe. It allows them to show off the sock they have stuffed in their crotch so the babes come backstage later on...
I don't play that way. I'm a girl. Sometimes I jump up and down though.

Because it is comfortable for them. That's the only reason any musician slings their bass in a certain way. Obscenity isn't the purpose - having the instrument in place in a way that maximizes fret reach, and dropping the right index finger onto the strings is.

As for me I play bass with the neck tilted up, makes it close as possible to playing an upright bass.
