Do she have a toy or something she doesn't like? A friend of mine put this talking plush toy under the tree that her daughter really didn't like and she steered clear of it.

Good for you- we are the masters, right? Well, maybe the cats don't recognize that, but perhaps we can be at least more clever? I read all of the answers, and many of them were accurate- try some. I have 6 cats and each has decided whether or not they're interested in the Christmas tree. If determined, they'll get in it. We first tried putting very jingly ornaments on the tree, so that would alert us to come shoo them away, but that got annoying in the middle of the night. Later we tried attaching ugly plastic grocery bags to the lower limbs, then aluminum foil- all of which they must have had a good laugh at. We've even tried the table top idea- but it's really akward with a 6 foot tree! Now, years of Christmases later, we firmly base the tree so it doesn't tip over, put breakable/precious ornaments up higher and more securely attached. We've developed a rather disturbing noise to yell when they attempt to turn the tree into a toy which is something like, "Aaaannnn!!" At least it distracts them and makes us think once again we are the masters, not the cats. Merry Christmas!

I put my tree in a room that i can gate off. For example my dining room which i use as an extra tv room and office has a front window, so i put the tree there and i put gates at the entryway to keep the baby in the living room. You can't be there 100% of the time. You can only put "safe" ornaments on the bottom, nothing breakable, and tie them on with ribbons instead of hooks, but you still run the risk of her pulling on the tree and possible pulling it over. Otherwise if you plan to put it in the same room that the baby spends most of her time then you will have to be adamant about saying no all the time.

We keep artificial tree so when our kids were little, for a few years, we only used the top most part of the tree in a live tree stand that we could adjust. We kept in on a coffee table or on the low console T.V. Then when they got older, we used the entire tree. No one ever knew that we didn't plan it that way or that we didn't get a 'new' tree after the kids were older and we could still decorate it and not lose an spirit of Xmas just because it was a smaller tree. Good luck. If it's a live tree, then good luck, or cut the tree to smaller or keep my ideas in mind for next year.

They actually make a gate that you can put around the christmas tree so that children cannot get to it and the ornaments.I am worried about that too actually-my son is 18 months old and has to get into everything-but at least he knows what no means and usually obeys. But anyway-I have seen the gate in parent magazines.

It really isnt possible unless you have the tree gated off (which would not be very asthetically pleasing I am sure). Or if you had the tree up on some sort of platform. Otherwise, this year just might have to be a year where only the top half of the tree gets decorated! Good luck!

The only solution I can think of is using some type of barrier between the tree and the baby. I guess you can get creative with what you use. But the best solution, although tiring, is keeping an close watch when in the area where the tree is.

Surround the tree with a gate.
That way your baby can not be locked up for a month and you can still enjoy the christmas spirit :) You can get one at Wal-mart or K-mart. Call around to stores and ask about small gates (like the expandable kind that you see around displays)

we had the same problem with my oldest boy, and like so many others decorating the tree and all the decorations end up on the top half of the tree, and then the next year my sisters son was born and she put up the gated barrier around hers but to make it a little more pleasing to the eyes she put christmas wrapping on the gates to make them look like gifts, and of course her son made confetti out of in a matter of minutes, I just used the plastic and foam type decorations that wouldn't break and anchored the tree at the top so he couldn't pull it down on top of him. and the rope lights keep them from getting hurt or tangled in the pretty lights they so love to stare at.

When we went to visit my mom for Christmas (my son was 8 months) she put up a gate around it. He would pull himself to a stand and just stare. He never did get past the gate!

Put a gate around the tree. Thats how I keep my dog away from it so it should work great for a small child.
